Operation 4-70 (Delta Dagger II) - FOB Mai Loc - Page 1
Narrative:
After this stand down, we went back to Mai Loc for Opn 4-70, Delta
Dagger II. Mai Loc was about half way between Quang Tri and Khe Sahn,
SW of Dong Ha. We convoyed again in trucks with 5 ton "gun" trucks
escorting us. These things were armored and had two 50 cal Brownings
and two 7.62 M-60 machine guns on board with lots of ammo. They were
used for breaking up ambushes.
On a sad note:
While we were at Mai Loc, Sprouse and I took the 3/4 ton and went on
a scrounging run to town. He was driving and when we left camp, I
saw Douche Bag running after the truck. We took her back a couple of
times but she insisted on going, so we took her with us. Sprouse
took us to a launch site for CCN he knew of and we got a case or two
of frozen steaks. Douch Bag stayed in the truck. She was good about
that. She wouldn't let an indigenous near her without raising hell.
When we came out of the mess hall, she was gone. We looked every
where. There were a lot of Yards there and I know she was shot with
a cross bow because there was no gunshot. There was nothing we could
do but leave and we both hated to go back and tell the story to the
rest. There were threats of reprisals on the site. |

Narrative:
We conducted McGuire rig training, not just for new VN but for the
101st pilots too. It is very difficult for a pilot to judge the
distance from the ground when dangling ropes out the door of his
helicopter. It takes practice and experience. He has to know when to
stop lifting vertically and when to start horizontal flight. This is
critical when lifting men out of the jungle canopy. Men have been
killed when a pilot misjudges the distance or comes under fire, gets
excited, and starts horizontal flight too soon. The men in the rigs
are dragged through the trees and injured or killed. |
