NARRATIVE: I was was in the 5th Group at Det C-2 when Plei Me broke. I was
the rigger who made most of the drops out of a C-7 and put the hole in the
chow hall roof. Maj Beckwith later gave me some of the 51 cal rounds that
were fired at us. Most of my drops were made at night and I think a couple
of yards were killed standing on top of a bunker by one of my first drops.
The first night we went in and dropped we took 21 51 cal hits knocking out
one engine and taking out about 12 inches of fuel line in the wing. I had
some guys that volunteered that helped me rig up some ammo; you might know
Pappy Yost and Harold Sproul on that first flight. Click on images to enlarge
